Technology has ultimately become a way of life for most people in this day and age. Technology is used for navigation, shopping, and things that are used on a daily business. Therefore, it is no surprise that technology has become an integral part in the learning experience. The influence of daily activity with technology in an individual's life affects the way that the view the world as well as the way they process information. Although, it is important to integrate basic skills into the learning experience, it is also important to integrate technology into the classroom with students and teach them in a way that they may better understand the information or the curriculum they are meant to learn. Therefore, due to the importance that technology has on society both teachers and students feel that getting a better understanding of the digital world will be beneficial in their future endeavors.
As far as the ISTE standards for educators are concerned, I found the most meaningful one to me to be the "citizen". I think helping students find ways to use the digital technology learned to help them in the digital world as well as positively contribute is an important standard to abide by. Teaching to me is about helping students succeed and being prepared for the real world as well as making sure they are having a positive affect on the world. This kind of mindset is crucial to the teaching experience in my opinion and can expand to the teaching of the digital world as well. I don't think any of the ISTE standards are necessarily out of my skill set currently as much as I just think that all things can be improved upon. I think that when it comes to technology there is always something new that can be learned, taught, and collaborated on.
I think calling the youth of today "digital natives" is appropriate because most of them do not know life without technology. Although there are individuals who do not have the capabilities or resources to access technology, most have the understanding of the influence technology has on their generation. For me, the definition of a digital native is an individual who uses technology on a daily basis and plays an integral part in their life. I think digital natives find that the use of technology is something the require rather than a luxury compared to the digital immigrants that did not grow with the resources that are used now. Although I consider myself a digital native due to the my experience with technology, the beginning of the digital world started later in my life. I grew up when technology was not as crucial to livelihood as it is now. However, I can definitely see the difference in how digital natives and digital immigrants react to technology. There is a sense of comfort that the natives have with technology opposed to others. The use technology for all aspects of life whereas immigrants can get by with the bare minimum sometimes. In many of my classes even now, my teachers on the more basic ways of gathering information or retaining it and I am grateful for having those skills as well as the digital ones. I think there are many things that will change over time when it comes to the digital future in education and the interactions that it will have on my relationship with my students and myself. Technology will only continue to get more advanced and become a more integral part of life for future generations.
